Help the environment and volunteer with the RSPB

The UK’s largest conservation charity currently has over 12,200 volunteers offering their time to help protect birds and other wildlife and the places they live.

Their work ranges from physical tasks and getting your hands dirty to administration roles and speaking to members of the public. You don’t have be a bird expert and just need to enjoy nature and want to protect our environment for generations to come.

RSPB volunteers provide the charity with around 705,000 hours of time each year, which is equivalent to 383 full-time staff. Without such support the RSPB would not be able to achieve all it does, and millions of birds, wildlife and habitats would not be as well established and maintained as they are today.

Vital volunteers
Alan Murray, Head of Volunteering for the RSPB says: ‘Our volunteers are so precious and without doubt we would not be able to achieve all we do without them. Whether you have one hour or one week spare, you will make a difference. Volunteers for the RSPB are giving something back to the environment, and as well as contributing to a worthy cause, they are keeping healthy and making new friends.’

David Crew, (38), who volunteers with the RSPB and suffers with aspergers syndrome and epilepsy, says: ‘Volunteering at the RSPB has completely changed my outlook and given me a new focus, as well making me feeling better both mentally and physically. I have a set routine, feel fitter and stronger, and most importantly happier.’
