October 2008. Joshua Lee Garrison of Mississippi pleaded guilty in to killing a bald eagle, in violation of the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Violation of the Act carries with it maximum possible penalties for a first offense of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine.

Following his guilty plea, Garrison was sentenced to six months of house arrest, a $2500 fine, two years of probation, and revocation of his hunting and fishing privileges for two years. The case was investigated by agents with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

"The bald eagle remains protected by federal law," said Robert Oliveri, USFWS Resident Agent-In-Charge for Mississippi. Federal agents will work closely with state conservation officers to investigate any killings of bald eagles."
