reviews/access_africa Safaris for people with limited mobility - By Gordon Rattray
Published by Bradt

Gordon Rattray is a quadriplegic who had visited 300 hotels, lodges and safari camps across East and Southern Africa. Before his diving accident, he drove overland trucks across Africa, so few will know the continents whims better. This book proves that there is no reason why a reduction in mobility need restrict adventuring in Africa, whether it is due to disability or age. Rattray goes into detail about the hotels he has covered, down to the level of which rooms and tents are most suited to people with reduced mobility.

Rattray covers all aspects and issues of travelling in Africa; there are just so many aspects of reduced mobility travel that do not occur to ‘mobile' travellers. Not all airlines, especially small regional ones, carry special equipment. Only South Africa has cars with hand controls for hire. Additional health concerns, the height of light switches,

And there are some African safari experiences that are more difficult to nigh on impossible to undertake without full mobility, or a vast effort, determination and/or lots of cash. Gorilla trekking; climbing Kilimanjaro; The Okavango Delta (accessed by light plane and dugout canoe); walking safaris; shark diving and many small boat trips, but even with these, where there is a will there is usually a way, and Africa people are highly adaptable and can find ways around many problems.
