The Complete Guide to Antarctic Wildlife – 2nd Edition.

reviews/antarctic-wildlife[1]
The clue is in the name, which, for once, is entirely true. This comprehensive guide to the mammals and birds of Antarctica is a must for anyone travelling to the region, and the region includes all the subantarctic islands from The Falklands to the Kerguelen Islands, via Tristan da Cunha, Prince Edward Island, Amsterdam Island, Chatham Island and the Islands to the south of New Zealand.

The Author
Hadoram Shirihai, the author, founded the International Birdwatching Centre. He is also the author of the fantastic ‘Field Guide to the Marine Mammals of the World’. He has travelled to nearly all the islands covered in this book, and I want his job!

The photography is fantastic, including photos of such rarities as the Magenta Petrel, Snares Tomtit and Chatham Island Pigeon. Where there are no photos available, illustrations by two of the world’s leading wildlife artists, Brett Jarrett & John Cox, are provided.

Each species, bird and mammal, has a very comprehensive description, as well as a paragraph or more on each of Distribution and Biology, Conservation and Taxonomy, as well as a photo or illustration and a comprehensive distribution map.
Must Have
This book is 500+ pages of sheer quality. The RRP of £35 is worth every penny if you are going to the Antarctic, or have even just a mild interest in the wildlife of the region.
