Whales and dolphins of the European Atlantic
By Dylan Walker and Graeme Cresswell The European Atlantic is all the waters between the northern coast of Spain, and Ireland & Wales. The Bay of Biscay, The English Channel and the Celtic Sea make up this surprisingly fertile (for cetacean spotting) region - For those of you who are followers of the shipping forecast, we are looking at Irish Sea, Fastnet, Lundy, Plymouth, Portland, Wight, Dover, Sole, Biscay & Fitroy.
31 species of cetacean have been recorded in this zone, including Blue whales (usually seen about once per year from Ferries), Fin whales, the second largest (surprisingly common in the Bay of Biscay in summer)
How and where to see the cetaceans.
Spotting cetaceans from the coast is the easiest, and hardest way to see them. Some locations can be rewarding, but there are few guarantees and only a limited number of species can be seen. Some of the headlands of West Cornwall, South West Ireland, West Wales and the North Coast of Spain provide reasonably regular sightings of some of the dolphins, but to be more certain you need to go out on a boat. Whether a commercial cetacean watching operation or one of the ferries that cross the area, this book is a clear and concise guide to all the cetaceans that you are likely to see.
