Birds of Colombia

Birds of Colombia, a field guide, By Miles McMullan, Thomas Donegan & Alonso Quevado.

Colombia is top of the premier league when it comes to bird biodiversity; currently has 1880 different bird species recorded, and the number is going up every year. Creating a field guide for such a huge number and breadth of species is quite an undertaking. The first thing the writers did was to go and ask people who know Colombia what they wanted from a field guide, and this is the answer.

Each plate contains 6-12 species, and each species has an illustration, a location map and details of size, habitat, and a few notes on distinguishing features.

To give you an idea of just how up date this book is, it includes Fenwick's Antpitta which was only discovered in 2007, and confirmed as a new species in spring 2010. The last Field Guide to Colombian birds was published in 1986. Twenty-five years later, there are more than 150 additional species which have been recorded in Colombia, making this field guide a great step forwards for the world's most important country in terms of bird diversity.

At 250 pages long and just 12.5 x 21 cm, it is the first genuinely pocket-sized comprehensive field-guide for one of the biggest neotropical avifaunas.

The book costs $29.95 from Proaves, and all profits go towards the conservation of Colombia's birds. Click here to buy a copy from Proaves.
