Elephant Reflections
Elephant Reflections contains a large collection of elephant photos taken in mostly in Kenya, but also in Gabon. There are some lovely images, but there is nothing much new here to be honest, and if you have a coffee table elephant book already this one won't contain anything you already have.
Dale Peterson's text is reasonably standard fare, though his theory on the massive butchery of elephants in Central Africa being driven by the meat trade rather than the ivory trade is interesting.
And there is some pretentious garbage too. "Yet frequently the lonesome splendour photographs suggest to me not merely dramatic isolation under aesthetically pleasing circumstances, not just deep estrangement on a large stage, but more, a deep strangeness." - What?
Karl Ammann has photographed wildlife throughout Africa, India, and Southeast Asia. His work has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Outdoor Photography, Natural History and African Geographic.
Dale Peterson is the author or editor of fifteen books, including the recent Jane Goodall: The Woman Who Redefined Man.
Ammann and Peterson's previous collaboration, Eating Apes (UC Press), was named a Best Book of the Year by The Economist and the Globe and Mail, and a Top Science Book of the Year by Discover magazine.
