Rare Birds Yearbook 2009

reviews/rare_birds_2009

Rare Birds Yearbook 2009 updates the status of the 190 rarest birds in the world. 66 species that were included last year are no longer covered, but for differing reasons.

The good news. 6 birds have left the list as they have been downgeaded on the IUCN Redlist. The lucky ones are the Gorgeted wood-quail, Marquesan Imperial pigeon, Purple-backed sunbeam, Gurney's Pitta, Rondonia bushbird and Somali Thrush.

The bad news. Sadly 8 birds were upgraded to Critically Endangered; Tristan albatross, Spoon-billed sandpiper, Tachira antpitta, Reunion cuckooshrike, Mariana crow, Floreana mockingbird, Akekee and the Gough bunting.

The worse news. 60 birds that were covered in last years book as there is no new information about the species, and there have been no sightings over the course of the year. Such birds as Jerdon's Courser, the Slender-billed curlew and the Australian night parrot, amongst many others, are left in limbo.

As well as giving a description of each of the 190 critically endangered species, there is a distribution map, poplualtion figures, details of threats and what conservation strategies need to be implemented to ensure the safety of the species. Amazingly, there are photos of nearly all of the birds too.

For anyone with an interest in the conservation of the world's rarest birds, this book is a must. The book also helps the conservation of the species as £4 from each sale is donated towards saving the birds included.
