Extinction and endemism
It is known that many species of birds have become extinct since the arrival of the first humans on New Zealand some 700 years ago; at least 41 species are known to have disappeared. Many, such as the giant Moas and the colossal Haast's eagle, the heaviest flying bird ever known that probably relied on the Moas for food, disappeared before the arrival of Europeans. However European immigration brought with it a huge influx of alien species that have devastated the flora and fauna of New Zealand.

However, things are now looking up and there remains an extraordinary diversity of species, and a high rate of endemic birds, such as the kiwi, morepork, takahe, saddleback, tui, kokako and the critically endangered kakapo.
